IAJ’s Justice for All PAC (or JFA PAC) is one of the largest and most influential PACs in the state. Year after year, it consistently ranks among the top ten PACs in terms of sheer money spent on campaigns and elections. Yet money spent is only half the story; the rest of the story is effectiveness, which is measured in terms of our overall success rate in electing and reelecting legislative and gubernatorial candidates who have a record of support for the rights of injured Iowans and those who stand accused, and who will work with us to safeguard our jury system and shield our courts from undue and untoward political influence.
IAJ staff and PAC trustees take our job as stewards of our members PAC dollars very seriously. We evaluate candidates based on their positions on our issues and their ability to win. We don’t fund landslides or long shots – we are deeply involved in races that make a difference when it comes to determining the balance of power. As a result, we have been able to build a bi-partisan pro-civil justice majority in the Iowa Legislature –– comprised of numerous Democratic and Republican legislators alike –– that stands in the way of and effectively blocks the worst bills that limit the rights of claimants/plaintiffs and criminal defendants. Bills that would advantage the defendants in tort and workers’ compensation litigation or the prosecution in criminal cases have a much tougher road to hoe thanks to the work our Justice for All PAC does during the election cycles.
Our electoral and legislative advocacy is a very tall order, as IAJ and our Justice for All PAC go up against a wasting array of vested interest groups –– medical and insurance lobbies, manufacturers and other business and industry groups, and their ilk. That’s why our electoral advocacy, in particular, comes with such a hefty price tag. Our Justice for All PAC amplifies the voices of hundreds of trial lawyers across the state, but that means we have to ask all of our members to put your money where your mouth is.
