Events & Membership Professional

Iowa Association for Justice (IAJ) is looking for an Events & Membership Professional to join our staff team in Des Moines, IA. This role is a longstanding position for a well-established statewide attorneys association (since 1973). It offers an excellent opportunity to take on wide ranging responsibilities in the areas of membership development, event planning and meeting coordination, marketing communications and, most crucially, planning and oversight of the Association’s high caliber and widely celebrated trial practice seminars.

The Association’s trial practice seminars combine the abundant knowledge and expertise of Association members with that of high-powered trial attorneys and jury consultants from across the USA, in order to steep Iowa trial lawyers in cutting edge trial advocacy strategies and techniques. The events and membership professional gets to work with some of the most talented (and famous) trial lawyers in the state and country.

How You Will Spend Your Days

  • You will plan and oversee continuing legal education conferences and seminars, including the Association’s annual convention.
  • You will take the lead in planning and coordinating Association meetings and events throughout the year.
  • You will cultivate partnerships and affiliations with event sponsors and exhibitors.
  • You will facilitate all aspects of the Association’s Justice In Deed initiative, which mobilizes trial lawyers to carry out community service projects in conjunction with seminars and other events.
  • You will assemble and organize the select committees that spearhead events and membership programs.
  • You will work with members on a daily basis, including the Association’s Board of Governors, executive officers and section leaders.
  • You will work with the executive director to develop the annual budget lines for events and membership programs, review monthly financial statements and monitor income to expense performance on your lines.

NOTE: This is not an all-inclusive list of job responsibilities.

This Role Might Be Right Up Your Alley If…

  • You are looking to take ownership of some very important projects and programs, maintain them at a high level and take them to new frontiers.
  • You have previous experience as an association events and membership professional and want to build your skills across multiple aspects of nonprofit association work.
  • You have keen entrepreneurial instincts and business acumen.
  • You have strong interpersonal and communication skills, in terms of both verbal and written expression.
  • You are able to assimilate information quickly, think critically, meet deadlines, accept accountability and work effectively under pressure.
  • You can handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize a heavy workload.
  • You can work well both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary and highly interactive staff team.
  • You enjoy cross-discipline collaborations and don’t mind sharing credit with other team members when appropriate.
  • You are willing and able to travel outside the Des Moines metro area several times a year, but not excessively, to attend and sometimes oversee multi-day events.
  • You are a capable time manager, adept at organization and project management, with sharp attention to detail.
